RF Microneedling

Radiofrequency microneedling is a device-based treatment that combines controlled micro-injuries to the skin with the delivery of radiofrequency energy into the dermis. The combined stimulus triggers a structured wound-healing response, producing new collagen and tightening the existing tissue framework.

How this fits into facial rejuvenation

RF microneedling addresses skin quality and early tissue laxity through a different mechanism than injectable treatments. Where biostimulators and skin boosters work via biochemical pathways, RF microneedling works through controlled thermal and mechanical stimulation, activating the skin's own repair processes and inducing remodelling of the deeper dermal architecture.

Clinically, it is most useful for improving skin texture and tone, tightening mildly lax skin, reducing the appearance of enlarged pores and surface irregularities, and building overall skin resilience. It is often integrated into a treatment plan alongside injectables, either as a preparatory step to improve skin quality before structural work, or as a maintenance treatment to preserve and consolidate results over time.

What the assessment evaluates

Not every patient is a suitable candidate for RF microneedling, and the decision to recommend it is based on clinical evaluation rather than patient request. Dr. Berns assesses the degree and type of skin laxity present, the quality of the dermis and deeper soft tissue, and the presence of any contraindications. Treatment parameters, including needle depth, energy settings, and the number of passes, are determined by the individual assessment.

The treatment is not appropriate for all skin types or all stages of skin ageing, and it is not a substitute for structural treatment in patients with significant volume loss.

Who may be suitable

RF microneedling may be considered for patients with mild to moderate skin laxity, visible texture irregularities, enlarged pores, or early crepiness, where the primary driver is loss of dermal quality and tissue tone rather than volume deficit. It is also relevant for patients seeking to maintain skin quality as part of a long-term rejuvenation programme.

It is not appropriate for patients with certain skin conditions, metal implants in the treatment area, active skin infections, or a history of keloid scarring. A thorough medical history is taken as part of every consultation.

Important considerations

RF microneedling requires a series of treatments for optimal results, typically three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Results develop progressively over several months as the collagen remodelling process completes. Skin may appear red and feel sensitive for twenty-four to seventy-two hours following treatment; most patients resume normal activity within a day.

As with all treatments, outcome varies between individuals and depends on skin type, age, and the degree of change being addressed. Realistic expectations are established during the consultation. Treatment is not recommended unless the assessment indicates it is the appropriate choice for the individual patient.
