Skin Boosters

Skin boosters are injectable treatments designed to restore hydration, improve skin texture, and strengthen the skin's structural quality from within. Unlike dermal fillers, they do not add volume or lift; their purpose is to restore the skin's intrinsic condition.

How this fits into facial rejuvenation

Skin quality is the first of three systems assessed in Dr. Berns' clinical framework. It is also frequently the most visible. Skin that lacks hydration appears dull and fine-textured; skin that has lost structural integrity becomes thin, crepey, and less responsive to other treatments.

Skin boosters address this at a biological level. By introducing hyaluronic acid or other active agents into the dermis, they restore moisture-binding capacity, stimulate cellular regeneration, and improve the overall quality and resilience of the skin. This creates a better foundation for subsequent structural treatments, and in many patients is the appropriate starting point before more complex work is considered.

What the assessment evaluates

Dr. Berns assesses skin quality as part of every full-face evaluation, including texture, hydration, tone, thickness, and the degree of photodamage or environmental degradation present. The skin assessment informs not only whether a booster treatment is indicated, but what product and protocol is appropriate, and how it should be integrated with any other planned work.

Skin boosters are not one-size-fits-all. Different products deliver different results; the correct choice depends on the specific deficiencies identified during the assessment.

Who may be suitable

Skin boosters are most beneficial for patients with visibly dehydrated or dull skin, fine-textured surface lines, or early skin laxity, where the primary deficit is skin quality rather than structural volume. They are also used in patients who have completed initial structural treatment and wish to maintain and improve the quality of the skin above that structure.

They are generally well-tolerated across a wide age range and skin type. They are not an appropriate treatment for patients whose primary concerns are movement-related lines or significant volume loss.

Important considerations

Skin booster treatments typically require an initial course of two to three sessions spaced several weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every six to twelve months. Results build gradually; initial improvement in hydration is noticeable within two to four weeks, with continued improvement in texture and skin quality over the following months.

Side effects are typically mild and transitory: temporary swelling, redness, and small injection-site papules that resolve within a few days. As with all injectable treatments, bruising is possible. Full details are discussed at the consultation.
